Why was it ever illegal to grow hemp?

Production of hemp was prohibited in Canada in 1938 under the Opium and Narcotic Drug Act as part of the battle against THC and other controlled substances.  However, over time, especially during WWII, hemp has been recognized as an excellent source of fiber and a business opportunity. Canadian laws have therefor been amended to allow for the cultivation of industrial hemp.

Will I get 'high' on hemp products?

No, you will not get "high" on hemp products.  The active ingredient that has psychoactive properties is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.

In hemp, the presence of this compound is less than 0.3%, with a maximum level of 1.5%.  This low percentage renders it inactive.

For comparison, marijuana contains anywhere upwards of 5% THC content.

The only "high" from hemp products is that which arises from healthy well being. Hemp products are in perfect Omega 6 and Omega 3 ratio for human consumption.  In addition, hemp flour and protein powders are rich in protein and fiber.
